when i went to shanghai in 2005 there were only two subway lines and one elevated train. actually the reason why i ended up being able to go was that i wrote a paper about the explosion in private car ownership in china and a series of flukes led to me being able to take courses at fudan university. when i went it was still at the point where cars were competing on the streets with rickshaws, bicycles, motorbikes and such, but you could tell that cars were winning.

pas-de-calais: a barren empty field with two cows bordered by wire fences. every ten miles a gaggle of cement houses with one tabac selling three-euro plonk and porn mags. jean-pierre wanted to move to the country but they couldn't afford anywhere in the south; now mathilde sits at home watching gameshows and wishing she was dead. like a bloated spider the hypermarket spreads its lattice of tarmac tendrils across the ashen earth. in the petrol stations the sandwiches have three globs of meat in a mayonnaisey matrix and tuc biscuits cost more than petrol. and lurking across pasture and flytipping ground from the motorway, the grit-streaked face of a nuclear power station. make it through this barren land and you reach your reward: paris, half concrete prison camp, half crumbling mausoleum to haussman's folly. the north of france is worthless

i really should have posted more about the TTC and the recent furore over future development plans. transit city, a network of LRTs was killed by mayor ford (he may have eaten it HURR) and then, apparently, brought back to life by the same rogue council that tried to ban plastic shopping bags. apparently experiences of driving behind the dundas streetcar colored his opinion. well duh, a streetcar without a separated right of way is going to cause horrific amounts of congestion. i remember riding the thing myself and being overtaken, several times, by the same astonishing obese woman on a bicycle. transit city is set to incorporated separate rights of way from the get go, and moreover would offer like ten times the coverage of the subway extension plans at a fraction of the cost

the irritating thing is that although there are a festering dizzy of new transit plans for within Toronto's sorely underserved daughter cities afaik no-one seems to be thinking of improving transport links between the metropolis and the outskirts. i mean the only way to get to missisauga from downtown is to drive or take the bus from Islington which has to putter along deeply congested roads. there's the University shuttle as well, which takes the highway and is even worse. my wife is starting a new job out there on Friday and will probably have to get out of the house at 7.15 for a 9am start. missisauga is approximately 25km away btw.

We've got this bad boy in pdx

I've always been partial to grainers, just because you can fit in that little hole in the back. It's like a little crusty den. If I were to ride trains, I'd def ride grainers.

Lol look at that crusty

i tried to post on the cbc about how they should ban private ownership of cars but i think they restricted my account. meanwhile millions of comments about how natives need beatdowns flow through.

i really want goldsmith to come and post in here about how trains typify the leftist child mentality or something. you want the choo choo to come pick you up and put you down again paying $10 a pop. good deal next to car payments, right? grow the hell up
#113
uk trains are cheaper than a car if you travel during work hours and plan your every movement 3 months ahead
#114
i take the train to work and it's free because tyhe government pays for it for employees ors omething. actually they cut the benefit to $125/month awhile ago but in the fiscal cliff negotiations where the US is slashing the deficit or whatever it got raised back up to $240/month so now im completely covered and i can ride the train all i want. trains are really cool because you just get on the train and then peace out, i llike to read books and it's the only time i really end up reading tyhem, there's no distractions at all like work or internet or other people. there are other people buit you just put on headphones and pretend they dont exist, everyone is in on it and pretends you dont exist either. so it's great, like, i dont even mind that i end up spending an over and ah alf on the train everyday, because it is more like leisure time than any other time of the day. this in contrast to driving a car which is so stupid!

Hey yo I was reading some stuff on Jax on a planning website just yesterday and in a new area the developer/city was being “socially responsible” by installing wheelchair pads at bus stops.

They refuse to build any sidewalks though, too funny.

jacksonville rules. they built a highway for the sole purpose of cordoning off downtown from de blecks and called it the martin luther king jr parkway

we should do a rhizzone game of railroad tycoon, seeing how popular trains seem to be here
